How to Choose The Right Fitness Program For You
Many people want to get in shape. Losing weight and getting fit are common New Year’s Resolutions. However, most people fail to meet their fitness goals, and the major reason for this failure is that they don’t choose the right training program for them.
As you probably know, there are many types of training programs on the market, and even if you join a gym, it might be difficult to find two fitness trainers who approach fitness the same way. When you start on your quest to get fit, you need to take the time to find the fitness training program that is best for you.
Below are a few questions that you should ask yourself:
What is Your Current Physical Condition?
If you are not in good shape, then you need to start with a beginner’s program. If you are in horrible shape, then you may need to start by just walking. Your physical condition and how often you currently exercise will determine which training options are open to you.
If you are obese, a senior or have an existing medical condition, you must consult your physician before starting a training program. They may have recommendations for how to start exercising, based on your current medical condition. For all others, it’s advisable to visit with the physician, at least for a basic physical check-up.
If you have any injuries, then you will need to start slowly. Even if you’ve exercised regularly for years, you want to make sure you don’t cause damage to your injured area. You might consider going to a physical therapist if the injury is to one of your limbs. This will ensure you get professional guidance on how to exercise your injured body part.
How Often Do You Plan On Exercising?
Many people complain that they don’t have the time to exercise. However, you can do a quick workout in less than 10 minutes. This might not be ideal, however, if that’s all the time you have, it will have to do.
Many people don’t realize how much time they spend on certain activities, like surfing the internet or watching TV. If you have time for these activities, then you have time for exercise. However, you don’t have to give one up for the other. You can exercise while watching TV, by stretching or riding your exercise bike. There are even treadmills with desks on them so that you can walk and surf the internet at the same time.
It’s best to set a schedule so that you know when you’ll be working out. The amount of time you have available will determine which fitness program is good for you. For example, if you only have a few minutes, you may decide to do some yoga poses instead of pulling out the weight bench. However, if you have an hour, you may choose a long run in the park over sitting on an exercise bike at the gym.
Where Do You Want To Work Out?
Many people choose to join a gym when they decide to get fit. Many of those people use their membership once or twice and then stop going. The simple fact is, the gym is not for everyone. However, you won’t know unless you try it. And even then, you might need to try a few before you can determine if you like working out in a gym or not.
Working out at home is not always a good option either. Some people find it easy to procrastinate about their workout. If you decide to work out at home, then you need to find a way to hold yourself accountable for your workouts. You have to make your fitness program a priority and stick to it for the scheduled time.
The other option is to train outdoors. This may include biking, walking or running. Once again you need to be motivated. However, if you choose one of these activities, you can find others to join you. When you know someone else is waiting for you, you’ll be more likely to get up and exercise. An accountability partner will increase your likelihood of succeeding in your “get fit” goal.
What Type of Activities Do You Enjoy?
Now that you know your limitations, have found free time and a location for your workout, it’s time to decide which fitness program is right for you. You can start by deciding what type of activities you enjoy.
If you currently enjoy leisurely or slow-paced activities, you can start with yoga, Pilates or walking. These activities are also good for people who have physical limitations or medical conditions. They are low-impact, however, you can increase the intensity of these workouts easily, as your endurance, strength and flexibility grow.
If you enjoy being outdoors, you can look for outdoor activities like tennis, swimming, running or biking. These activities will get your outside. However, you do need a backup plan for days with inclement weather.
If you’ve been exercising regularly, you may want to increase the intensity of your workout. In that case, you might try Cross-fit or train for a marathon, biathlon or triathlon. Each of these will give you a goal to work towards and increase your fitness level.
If you try a fitness program and don’t like it, don’t force yourself to stick with it. Just try something else. In time, you’ll find the right combination of fitness programs and training routines to meet your needs. Then you just have to be consistent and you’ll see the results you hope for.
